There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is not permitted. Eight casinos are based in a generally tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; although, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of many border crossings.

The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, contains 150 slots and 60 tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that highlights a number of amenities in addition to the gambling den, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight table games.
